"Born to Run" was one of the singles released of the album of the same name in 1975. The album was Springsteen's effort to break into the mainstream - which it did. He's said the album was "the album where I left behind my adolescent definitions of love and freedom—it was the dividing line."
The song was placed at #21 on Rolling Stone's list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time. It's also one of The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's 500 Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll. On June 12, 1979 "Born to Run" was named New Jersey's "Unofficial Youth Rock Anthem" which Springsteen always thought ironic since the song was actually "about leaving Jersey."
