"Bennie and the Jets" was featured on Goodbye Yellow Brick Road in 1973 even though Elton John was set against releasing it as a single, thinking it would fail. The song ended up peaking at #1 on the US singles chart in 1974 and was certified Gold on April 8, 1974 and Platinum on September 13, 1975. By August 1976 it had sold 2.8 million copies.
The single became John's first Top 40 hit and the acceptance of "bennie" on R&B radio helped land him a guest appearance on Soul Train in May 1975.
